Summary

The nursery space within the CentreThe nursery space within the Centre.

This new build nursery school is a highly successful environmental building despite looking and feeling like a ‘normal’ school. Renewables have been integrated into the building rather than feeling like ‘bolt on’ extras. 80 children attend the nursery and crèche facilities which include babies to 4 year olds. The Centre also includes a meeting room and other rooms used by the community both during and out of school hours.

The Centre contains photovoltaic panels, solar thermal, a ground source heat pump and mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system together with rainwater harvesting system which are all totally integrated into the building and its operation and enables electricity to be sold back to the grid.

The technologies are being monitored by the energy manager at the local authority to assess the impacts and associated savings made as a result of the technologies implemented. The project has provided evidence to the local authority that investment in low carbon technologies are beneficial and renewables are now being incorporated into all new projects.
