Lighting and stand by losses

lighting and stand by losses

As fabric performance improves lighting becomes a more significant energy use within a school. Careful design to maximise daylight, through passive design, and minimise reliance on electrical lighting is therefore essential.

Where electrical lighting is required good control and low energy fittings should be specified.

Equipment should be turned off at the point of electricity supply when not in use. Procedures for checking that this takes place should be set up.

Equipment with very low stand by losses, less than 1watt should be specified when buying new equipment.

What should I do?

Specify low energy equipment and encourage good housekeeping to switch off equipment when not in use.
