The form of the building affects the amount of energy used for heating and cooling. A sustainable design must provide comfort through winter and summer with minimum use of active heating and cooling otherwise energy use and carbon emissions will increase.

A more compact form is more energy efficient because heat loss from fabric is reduced. Compact buildings are easier to heat and distribute heat in an even way. Less compact forms have a greater surface area with greater heat loss.

The section of a school classroom is as important as its plan. It will impact on the penetration of natural light and the design of the ventilation system, especially if it is natural ventilation.  Providing daylight and fresh air to the full depth of a space is beneficial as is providing a means of exhausting stale air at high level.

What should I do?

Encourage the design team to consider and discuss form issues at the early design stage.
