To achieve a holistic sustainable approach it is import to consider the links to existing infrastructure and provision of new infrastructure including transport systems, water/sewage, energy supply and waste management. In order to create a sustainable school, it is vital that infrastructure provision is considered at the planning stage.

Research suggests that up to 70% of an individual’s ‘ecological footprint’ could be influenced by efficient urban design. It is therefore vital to design and build schools and the areas around them to incorporate ‘sustainable urban infrastructure’ which will avoid locking people into high-carbon lifestyles. It is much easier and more cost effective to provide sustainable infrastructure at the planning and design phase, than to try to ‘retrofit’ it into existing developments.

What should I do?

Consider a holistic approach to infrastructure provision from the early planning stage.
