Cycling and Walking

A sustainable transport system should provide convenient and easy-access whilst not being over-reliant on car travel. Travel by car creates local air quality and safety issues and contributes to climate change through the production of greenhouse gases.

In order to reduce transport emissions, schools should be located near homes and shops, leisure and health facilities which reduces the need to drive or use public transport particularly for multipurpose trips. Schools should be located as near to the centre of a catchment wherever possible which reduces the need for transport by car, as the site will be more accessible. The emphasis in development should be on good accessibility for a large as population as possible rather than increasing mobility.

What should I do?

Provide good walking, cycling and public transport facilities to reduce dependence on the car.
