Management of materials coming onsite

Developers and architects have a key role in reducing waste generation through effective use of resources at design stage.  By carefully managing and efficiently using materials coming onto site, the amount of materials used and waste produced can be reduced. This can reduce extraction of raw materials and resources such as oil and minerals, and reduce energy use which in turn reduces emissions.

During the planning phase, developers can specify requirements in waste minimisation. At the design phase, architects can explore approaches to design out waste including avoiding the use of irregular form or by using durable materials or materials that can be disassembled easily after the lifetime of a building.

Reducing waste during construction can also be supported through off-site pre-construction processes and prefabricated building parts.

What should I do?

Ensure that resource management is applied from the design stage and consider pre-construction.
