Sustainable school design should include minimisation of the use of materials. This involves:

A low-volume high-value material approach to design must be explored.

Material choice is traditionally linked with cost and performance, quality and durability. Sustainable design should also take into account the environmental impact of materials, together with the quality, location and credentials of suppliers and contractors.

A life cycle approach to material use considers the source and manufacturing process associated with materials, lifetime durability, maintenance requirements and disposal.

What should I do?

Use a life cycle approach to material selection for all components.
